Applying Oil and Hardwax Oil on a Wooden Floor

You've installed a new untreated parquet floor or sanded down an old parquet and now you need to oil it, but you have no idea how to get started? Well, that is briefly explained below.

A wooden floor always needs a protective layer. Otherwise, the pores remain open and stains appear very quickly. Additionally, these pores will fill with dust. This will cause the floor to turn black. There are various types of finishing methods such as varnish, wax, (hardwax) oil. On this page, I explain how Ciranova's hardwax oil is applied in 2 layers.

Manually oiling a parquet floor

  • If possible, do not yet install the baseboards or remove them. It is easier to manually oil them before installation.
  • Make sure the floor is clean.
  • Wear rubber gloves and old (work) clothes, as stains do not come out of clothes and are very hard to remove from skin.
  • Stir the oil well, ensuring that the sediment fully dissolves.
  • Sit on your knees in the furthest corner of the room and work towards the exit.
  • Apply the oil. We prefer using a sponge. You can also use a roller or brush, but they tend to splatter more.
  • Apply the oil to an area of about 1m² (or as far as your arms can reach).
  • Let the oil soak in for 5 minutes.
  • While waiting, you can oil another section.
  • After the 5 minutes are up, remove any oil that has not yet absorbed with a non-fluffy cloth. This can be an old t-shirt, rag, or paper.
  • Change the non-fluffy cloth regularly as you risk streaks and blurry stains if the cloth is soaked with oil. Be sure to submerge used cloths in water as they can otherwise ignite.
  • Continue this way until the entire floor is done. Allow the oil to dry for at least 6 hours before applying the 2nd layer of oil. This can be done in the same manner as the first layer.
  • After applying the 2nd layer, wait 24 hours before walking on the floor and 48 hours before placing furniture.
  • For the first 10 days, the parquet floor should not come into contact with moisture. So, do not mop! After these 10 days, it is recommended to mop the floor as often as possible (2 to 3 times per week) with parquet soap for 1 month. Afterwards, mopping once a week with parquet soap is sufficient.
